Money sucks!
-AND-
You can do it.
Hi, I’m River - former financial advisor, current hater of capitalism. I want to teach you how to take care of your own money, without selling your soul.
Why care about personal finance if you hate capitalism?
First, let me get this out of the way: Hoarding wealth is not the same as liberation.
And I want liberation.
So why do I still care about money? Three main reasons:
1. These financial systems affect your life.
It’s exhausting to be in financial crisis. I want to help you create some stability, and share that stability with others, so that we can put our limited energy toward fighting for liberation and justice.
2. I want us to understand the nuanced ways in which our current financial systems are violent, and reduce as much harm as possible.
Credit scores are violent. The debt crisis is violence. The entire US healthcare system is violent. The stock market should not exist. And yet, most of us have to interact with most of these systems on a regular basis. I have some ideas to share about harm-reduction and creative mutual aid.
And, as we build alternatives to these structures, I want us to not accidentally repeat some of the same mistakes. So we need to understand the nuances of how these systems work right now.
3. I want us to practice the skills we’ll need in the next world.
This one might feel a little counter-intuitive, but the skills we develop in taking care of our personal finances are skills that will be useful in a post-capitalist world, too. Budgeting is just the skill of resource management. Saving and investing requires the skill of future thinking. Even understanding taxes and insurance can help us understand ways to care for each other in good times & bad times.
I’m here to show you how to get your personal finances in order.
Let’s have a conversation! If you’re seriously considering working with me, schedule a free Fit Check so we can talk about what’s going on and what you need. I’ll ask about your income, debt, savings, goals, money management practices, financial literacy, and struggles - then use all of that information to figure out whether we’re a good fit to work together! (And I absolutely do not expect you to be able to answer all of my questions with confidence - I know that you’re talking to me because you don’t have all of the education and tools that you need!)
I’ve helped over 600 folks with their finances to date. I’m sure I can help you, too.
